Can a Tag Team reach the highest heights without unity?
When you think of all the classic tag teams over the years, both in Australia and Internationally, the team invariably is a cohesive unit, always on the same page. After all, that’s how a team is supposed to operate.
And then you have the current MCW Tag Team Champions – Slex and Tommy Knight.
Individually, they are two of the best singles wrestlers in the entire country, and they proved it by facing each other in some classic matches in MCW and beyond in 2022. And then circumstances saw them become an impromptu team, and despite their animosity towards each other, they managed to defeat The Natural Classics and win the MCW Tag Team Championship.
Yet, their success hasn’t created unity. In their last title defence, Slex was left to fend off The Natural Classics alone as Knight was struck down with an injury. That was back in October last year, and they haven’t teamed since.
Which brings us to their next challengers, a team that in 2022 not only got new levels of International interest them thanks to their incredible series of matches against Aussie Open, but also demonstrated that unity is key for long-term success in the tag team division – The Velocities.
Jude London and Paris De Silva showed the world what Australia already knew – Australian tag teams are as good as any across the breadth of professional wrestling, and they’re no strangers to success in the middle of the MCW ring.
Conventional wisdom would dictate that The Velocities should have this in the bag.
But Slex and Tommy clearly aren’t a conventional tag team – despite clearly hating each other, they seemingly hate losing more.
Instability vs Unity. Unconventionality vs Conventionality. Slex and Tommy Knight vs The Velocities for the MCW Tag Team Championship.
